Justin’s Final Thoughts

I will take new approaches to formatting my arguments, and try to use the techniques I learned this semester

I do think this class has opened my eyes to the strength that pictures and videos have and how they can be implemented to help strengthen my arguments, so I could be open to using them in future essays given that it is acceptable within the essays guidelines

Something that’s resonated with me this semester is that everything has some aspect of persuasive language behind it

Lexi’s Final Thoughts

  1. I will shape my persuasive arguments in the future by having commentary and backing it up with evidence. I found from a lot of the readings we read individually they would write out their statements, then have a resource or example that backed up what they said. It made the writing have a flow to it, and it made the readings more enjoyable and engaging for the audience.
  2. I definitely think I will incorporate more images and interactive design into my persuasive work in the future. It makes your audience have a desire to watch and listen to what the speaker is saying. I find myself zoning out when all I hear are words coming out of someone’s mouth. But when there are pictures that are incorporated, it gives a better sense of understanding, as well as acknowledging someone’s point of view.
  3. A specific concept that I will remember most this course is realism. That is a concept that I didn’t have a lot of experience with prior to this course. We see media in our everyday lives, so being able to look and have a better understanding of it is really helpful. This course has taught me to see media from a different point of view.

Caleb Balderas Final Thoughts

1.) The shape of my persuasive arguments will forever be changed after taking this course. In the past ive always been heavy on specifically writing to make an argument, but now ive learned many new techniches and ways of incorporating media to help form my argument.

2.) I will most definetly use more use of audio and visuals in the future as this is the most effective way of forming an argument. Audio and video paired with some good persuasive writing can really help to persuade an audience.

3.) One specific technique that ill take away from this course is the ability to do research. Before this course no course had really pushed me to just spend hours on end looking through the web researching specific key information for our group project. I can walk away from this class knowing im much better at doing research.

Alissandra T Personal Thoughts

In order to shape my persuasive arguments in the future I can definitely now know how to use statistics, if needed, global/community evidence, and personal encounter.

I am someone who enjoys having more visual image and audio in arguments or presentations, etc. Because it helps so much giving a better understanding, so I will for sure be using it more. What i liked for example that applies is in our firearm video essay we had typing audio, narrative audio, and visual typing all at the same time which can help understand the information much better and faster.

A technique I would be using would be identifying, for example could be within a personal matter because I may have encounter a situation that can help give identify a better understanding.

Hannah Obebeck: Final Thoughts

  • I will shape my persuasive arguments differently in the future by thinking of the topics I learned in this class such as objectivity, realism, narrative, and many others when creating my arguments. I’ll be more thoughtful of how images I use or audio will affect my audience.
  • I lean toward writing and using text because it’s my strong suit, however, after this class, incorporating other media will allow my arguments to be much stronger in the future.
  • One specific concept I will remember most from this course is the use of narrative in arguments because it was the most effective for me when looking at arguments. I feel that a good story that moves people through identification can be very convincing for an audience.

Charlie White’s Final Thoughts

  1. I will put more thought and research into making a good and strong argument that will persuade people.
  2. Yes, because I learned more about incorporating image and audio through working and editing the video essay. I feel a video essay can be an effective tool when persuading a group of people into believing what you are saying.
  3. The technique I will remember the most is making a video essay and using that to persuade people of the message you are trying to get across. It was definitely the thing I had the most fun working on throughout the semester and something that can be used when trying to get a point across.

Joshua Vasquez Final thoughts

I will shape my persuasive arguments differently in the future by looking at different aspects of the argument. From the way the literary devices are used and how they represent the argument.

In the future I will be more likely to incorporate more of an interactive design into my persuasive and critical work because it keeps the audience attention. This allows for the audience to get informed and all more people to be more interested in my work.

The concept I will remember most after this course is to look at everything in the media, even the smallest details because of the value they add and the way it can form an image/topic.

Carrie Johnson’s Final Thoughts

  • I will shape my persuasive arguments differently in the future by appealing more to emotions, so using desire more as a tool. If I desire a certain thing, and I’m passionate about what I’m working on, then my audience will become at LEAST interested and possibly passionate about it, too.
  • I 100% will incorporate image, audio, and interactive design. Clear images and clean audio can sometimes make or break an argument. It just offers a level of professionalism that in turn, offers reliability. Interactive design shows the extent to which work has been done on a sight. There’s a good balance between too much or too little on a website, though.
  • One concept that I will remember the most is our conversations on journalism and democracy. This is because it pertains specifically to who I am and what I want to do, so it was really insightful to hear classmates thoughts on journalism and learn about the objectivity that is involved as this is a term I had heard many times but wasn’t 100% clear on. “We freeze some moments in time. Every culture has its frozen moments, events so important and personal that they transcend the normal flow of news,” is what Dan Gillmor wrote. The news has such power that we don’t realize, sometimes, to persuade in all ways, whether transparent or not.

Jason Jones Jr’s Final Thoughts

One thing that I saw in the other group’s projects that was very effective that I would incorporate more into my own next time is writing. Since our group used Instagram as our website, we have a lot of pictures. I would like to balance it more with some writing to explain our thoughts more thoroughly rather than just having the image and a small caption. I will also be more likely to incorporate more images and audio in my persuasive and critical work in the future because these are tools that grab your audience’s attention and keep them engaged until they finish viewing your work. I think that visual media and writing work really well together. One specific technique that I will remember the most after this course is the technique used in the video essay about the photographer capturing the perfect photograph. I really like how they sort of tease what happens in the end without giving it away fully because this kept me wanting to watch the video and just seeing how the photographer developed her pictures to finally capturing the last one with the big moment of reveal. This reminds me of Hamilton in the sense that they say what happens at the end of the play, but in order to figure out why and how they got there you have to keep watching which I think is very effective and I would definitely use this technique in my own work in the future.

Chase Antosca Final Thoughts

  • I did believe our technique of interviewing guests to inform them about our topic of misrepresentation of African Americans in the media was persuasive to allow people to see the reactions of the interviewees and how surprised they were. What I would do to shape the persuasive argument different in the future is have more sites and information for background on the topic like the firing arms group did on their home page. I think this will allow us to back our argument which we had many real life examples, but giving people different perspectives on the narrative.
  • In the future, I would like to add additional design into our media projects. I believe we had many good pictures, but I think we could have been better in showing more statistics and videos of our topic.
  • I really have learned much about realism and how important it is in our media consumption. Just being able to identify with the media and feeling like you are represented to something that is true to life is powerful and can be a strong technique in persuading others.
